JAAG has begun developing an audit tool for digital systems…

…thanks to a very generous offer of initial technical help from a software development company.

The story behind this idea:

Some JAAG members have years of experience in safety-related and environmental systems.

They saw that technical audit and certification were an effective means of raising product standards.

After witnessing the harmful consequences of digital technologies, they began to explore the idea of adapting this positive experience to the field of AI and algorithmic systems.

Where are we now:

With our partner, JAAG has now devised the specification of, and implemented, a simple prototype audit tool which can first be used in a variety of technical audits.

The idea is that, when confidence in the tool has been established, it could be extended it to meet the challenging demands of ethical audit.

JAAG is now seeking a partner with the right software development capability to take this project to the next stage.

Why are the demands of ethical audit so challenging?

  • Ethical AI audit is a new field of research.

  • A key question is: “Whose Ethics?”

  • Over 100 different “ethical guidelines” have been published, most are inadequate

  • Only one or two have been authored with significant input from women.

  • Research and consultation are needed on a larger and wider scale.

Our approach is to build a flexible audit tool for more familiar audits and in time to adapt it to the demands of ethical audit once there are effective guidelines.
